Once Upon a Time...

Ages ago, the world was threatened by the cosmic dragon Zarkham. Seven heroes ventured across the world and defended against the beast, but in doing so the magical energy and relics they wielded proved devastating. They thwarted Zarkham, but the world was sundered into several pieces, held aloft in the ether. These "skylands" became the refuge of the people who survived the cosmic dragon's onslaught.
That was almost 1000 years ago, The Seven heroes were lauded and hailed as saviors, some worshiped as gods, and others decried as villains by some. The isolated skylands separated the kingdoms and gave rise to many seeking treasure and fortune, as the old world had been split into legendary troves and hidden-away pockets of gold or artifacts. Where the Material Plane was split, rifts into the elemental planes or Celestial or Demon planes crept, and those who seek to move more quickly around the sundered world look for these pockets to either travel through or communicate with powerful elemental or higher beings.
The people live knowing that the skyland they call home might be the only lands they know. Travel by airship is expensive and dangerous - aerial beasts and dragons hunt the skies, and adventures are praised for their ability to take on treacherous journeys.
Because of the high-level magic the Seven used to combat Zarkham, many see magic as a danger, and wizards and clerics are rare in basic communities. Magic is feared for its danger, and often magicians are deemed suspicious or downright hunted, and for magic-users to survive means struggling to find teachers or resources. Although, many exist.
This is the world of the Skylands, where adventures may seek glory across the clouds and in dark, forgotten ruins. Where stories of heroism are tempered with warnings of power, and where people long separated perhaps deem to be reunited....
